COVID-19 RESPONSE

Happy Thanksgiving from the Cafe!

Dear Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving from the Cafe!

With you, we will get through the winter and covid and continue to reduce hunger together. With you, Sunrise will emerge from the terrible covid cloud and return to normal. Your partnership and donations sustain us. If you able to, please donate at www.sunrisecafenewhaven.org. Thank you for your support.

Sunrise Cafe, has been serving free breakfast to New Haven’s homeless and food insecure for going on six years from the space we rent from St PJs at the corner of Chapel and Olive. Sunrise Cafe and you. You – as a volunteer, as a donor, as a friend to the Cafe – helping your New Haven neighbors.

As the weather gets colder, in addition to serving breakfast outdoors, we will be delivering breakfast to New Haven’s day warming center. We have already switched to insulated breakfast containers to keep our breakfasts warm.

In anticipation of winter, we explored options for improving indoor air quality and circulation and air exchange but it was simply not affordable for our small program. We also explored outdoor heaters and found them to be relatively ineffective, unwieldy to store and could potentially cause injuries.

Our volunteer opportunities will be limited until there is an effective and widely adopted covid vaccine. We do need volunteers for an hour in the morning to deliver breakfasts to the warming center. Please be in touch if you can help (art@sunrisecafenewhaven.org).

The Cafe board of directors would like to increase our membership. Please be in touch if your are interested (art@sunrisecafenewhaven.org).

Thank you for everything you do to provide for the homeless and hungry in New Haven.

Please be well and stay safe during this exceptionally challenging time.
